How to Resolve NAT Type Issues with Gaming Consoles?

Before we start to discuss how to Resolve NAT type issues with gaming consoles through a Linksys router. Let's know about the NAT Type. Network Address Translation (NAT) is the ability of a router to translate a public IP address to a personal IP address and the other way around. It includes security to the network by keeping the private IP addresses hidden from the surface world.

To Find Out the NAT Capability of the Modem, Follow These Steps:

Step 1: Access the router’s web-based setup page. Visit any browser (Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, or Safari) and enter ‘192.168.1.1’ on the Address bar then press Enter.

Step 2: You will be then requested for your log-in details. Leave the blank Username field and enter ‘admin’ on the Password field then click OK.

Step 3: Click on the Status tab.

Step 4: Scroll down and appear for the Configuration Type panel and check if you've got a personal or public IP address. If you're getting a personal IP address, you would like to line your modem to Bridge mode.

Gaming consoles such as Xbox 360R, PlayStationR3, and Wii™ frequently experience NAT-related issues resulting in a poor gaming experience. This problem is fixed by checking the settings on your router which contribute to NAT issues.

Sometimes thanks to the built-in firewall of the router, you'll have to open ports. you'll do that by either doing Linksys smart wifi Port Forwarding or Port Triggering. When the ports are successfully started, the NAT Type will change to Open or Moderate. Thus, making the gaming console work successfully online.

When it involves the opening of the ports, you'll have to set the IP settings on the gaming console to static to finish the set-up. This procedure is going to be further explained through the steps below.

There are Three NAT Types to Discuss Your Connectivity to Other Players within the Internet:

Open NAT - This suggests that your gaming console has the power to attach to anyone’s games, host games, and other users are going to be ready to find and hook up with the sport you're hosting.

Moderate NAT - This suggests that your connectivity to other players is neither limited nor open. you'll be ready to hook up with other players but some functions are going to be limited.

Strict NAT - It recommends that you have restricted connectivity with other people and people that are Strict or Moderate NAT.

Determining NAT capability of the modem

Why this works: Most DSL modems have an equivalent subnet and IP address (192.168.x.x) as that of your Linksys router. Fixing it to Bridge mode will then make the web IP address show up as a public address, therefore, avoiding conflict with double NAT issues on the network.

This can be confirmed by verifying the web IP address on the Linksys router while it's connected to the modem.
